Sometimes My Body Lies to Me

I did my first ride of substance since Livestrong Philly today, a 25 mile ride along some very familiar streets. I was a little sick, fighting the start of a cold.

Still, it was harder than I imagined it would be, and I was definitely feeling hungry and a little weak. Interestingly, I had just listened to a bit more of Every Second Counts by Lance Armstrong, where he spoke of becoming disoriented on a Tour de France stage a few years back.

I wasn’t quite there yet. I also know that I suffer from some “fake” hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia–that sometimes I test and find my sugars are actually high (at least sometimes this is dehydration) despite a hard workout, and other times after a hard workout I feel hypoglycemic and am sure my sugars are low but find they’re in acceptable range.

This was kind of one of those latter times. After a 25 mile ride–well, during it–I was feeling hypoglycemic. When I tested in the end, my sugar was a hair low at 97. That’s really not out of the norm, but for me, that’s lower than I typically am.

I have to get used to those feelings if I intend to get my sugars into a normal range.
