My Story, Part Eighty Nine

I’m committed to another event–this one the Haleiwa Metric Century.

I’ve done this event before, in 2008, when I finished–even though I struggled through–four big events. I actually did very well for sixty of the sixty two miles, then flatted. The worst part is that I did something I almost never do in this kind of ride–I set a time goal. And I was right on the verge of making it, until I flatted.

Interestingly, however, the other things that I tend to do in a group event–incorrectly–happened: I started too fast and tried to hang with the fast group too long, I was toasted (but in this case saved by a tandem I drafted for a long long way), and at the end I made an error in judgment that cost me (riding over a metal plate resulting in a flat).

This time, I hope things will be different. I’m hoping I’ve learned my lessons.

We’ll see if I can say the same after this ride is done.
