Finally! Bike Maintenance!

It took long enough and it was complicated by the PayPal debacle I blogged about on Uncommon Cents, but I finally got a bit of bike maintenance done–and once my new cassette comes (ordered, of course, via eBay), there’ll be even more.

What have I done?

Changed headset lockring: This bike came with an aluminum, traditionally threaded one inch headset. Argh. That’s for light people, and I’m not a light person. I had already changed the top race, and now I added a steel lockring. I’ll probably change the whole headset after this season is done.

Changed seatpost: I’ve had the new post for awhile but haven’t gotten it installed until now. Nothing was horrible about the old post except it was about a quarter inch too short.

Rewrapped handlebars: Fortunately the Profile bar tape I use is reusable. I really don’t like it when the bars unwrap, but it takes me so long to get to rewrapping–this time the end of the bar started unraveling so I really had no choice. It looks so much better, though.

Installed cyclometer: Early season I don’t really care about speed, and my old cyclometer died. So I mostly would just go by heart rate and time, but since I now have the Haleiwa Metric Century looming, it’s important for me to get more serious about mileage and speed.

Changed front wheel: I bought a wheelset recently locally–thankfully because the spoke nipples on the current set are frozen and they’re really in need of replacement, since some are breaking–and put a tire on the front and installed it. I still haven’t done anything with the rear, because I have yet to get the cassette for it.

Still to come–changing the rear wheel and rear cassette, as well as the chain.

Feeling way better about riding with a freshly maintained bike.
