Reading Up on ITBS

From everything I can tell, I have iliotibial band syndrome, also known as ITBS.

What I know for sure is that it can hurt–sometimes a lot–and is what had me limping through the only marathon I’ve ever done.

The details on the ITB can be found here. It’s inflammation, and it can be caused by a lot of things, including overuse and overambitious increases in mileage.

The one thing that keeps coming up in treatment is rest. The unfortunate part is rest doesn’t go hand in hand with a training schedule. Ice, compression, elevation, yes.

I’m reading about foam rolling–I’ll try that next. I’m not at the point where I’m in a lot of pain, but I am a little concerned. My knees both hurt after the Ford Island Bridge Run, although not horribly. I’m hoping that’s just because of sprinting for the finish.
