Does Exercising in a Group Help or Hurt?

I went for a group run on Thursday night; while I have had a training partner at work when Twitterless E was stationed temporarily where I am, since she’s left I’ve been training alone, which I almost always did before she came.

But on Thursday I met up with a few of my Twitter friends for a run. It was a Thursday, meaning, for me, about a five mile run at a recovery pace, which is very slow. And I was already at best the same speed if not considerably slower than all of the gang I was running with.

So they ended up waiting for me at various times. I hope they didn’t pity me, because I was doing the training I was planning on; I felt like I was slowing them down. And we ended at only about 1/2 of my intended distance.

I’ve heard from many that they get inspired and motivated to train when they have a partner, since they feel like the social pressure to show up is a positive thing, but for me, the social pressure to keep up–during a run I know I need to do slowly–might be a negative thing.

What do you think about training in a group?
