Does Hiking Equal Running?

Every so often, instead of a Sunday run, I go on a Sunday hike, this past week to Kuliou’ou with a bunch of my Twitter friends. It’s a nice change of pace.

I’m just not sure how to count that on my workout schedule.

Is it the same as a run, hour for hour? Less? More? I still haven’t figured it out. It’s clearly exercise, but it’s a whole other kind of fitness.

Anyone with opinions?

Don’t know if this helps any but here are the stats from my Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Fitness Trainer.

    Total Distance: 4.45 miles
    Total Time: 2:51:51
    Avg Pace: 38:39/mile
    Avg Speed: 1.6 mph
    Max Speed: 6.0 mph
Total Calories: 488 cal (http://oahuhiking.com estimates an 860 cal burn)
    Avg Heart Rate 142 bpm
    Max Heart Rate 176 bpm
    Total Ascent: 2778 ft

Based on these numbers and looking back at my running training, the calorie burn matches up closer to the distance than the time.
