Strength is My Weakness

If there’s any one area of my fitness I’ve ignored recently it’s been strength. I used to lift weights a few times a week, but with the demands of training for running and cycling events I’ve stopped that part of my routine.

I need to restart it.

Strength building may or may not help me lose weight, but it will help me lose body fat. And I really ought to be better at strength building than aerobic exercise–I have the body for it.

Beginning this week, I’m going to integrate more strength building into my routine. And hope it helps.

My Story, Part One Hundred Ninety

I’m tired and sore. The Great Aloha Run on Monday following a hike and bike ride on Sunday (and a bike ride alone on Saturday) took a lot out of me. That said, I’m pretty pleased with my results. To drop over a minute and a half per mile from my previous best time tells […]

The Great Aloha Run is the longest race I’ve done on a regular basis. This year’s edition marked my fourth GAR; I’ve only done two Honolulu Marathons and I’ve not done any other running event more than twice (although I plan to do the Ford Island Bridge Run for a third time in April). One […]

I’m hoping I’m ready. The Great Aloha Run is an eight plus mile run that I’ve done the last few years. My average speed has been about thirteen minutes per mile, which is not all that hot. Considering I just did a 10K at a pace under 10 minutes per mile, I intend to obliterate […]

With the Great Aloha Run nearly upon us, I’m winding up my training and resting a bit before the big event. Today’s run was the first in awhile and was relatively slow and easy. I have a longer run on Thursday night and a short quick one on Saturday. The big day is Monday! [ad#Google […]

I’m in an eating funk that I need to get out of. It’s been a more than stressful few days and my diet has shown it. I have to get it together before I not only gain weight with less than a week left until the Great Aloha Run but have other problems like a […]

Catching Up With Life

Working out has made life difficult. Yes, I reap the benefits of being fitter, but at the same time I ignore many other aspects of life, and with four paying jobs, two elderly people to care for, and other responsibilities, it’s a tough situation. So I spent a little bit of time catching up with […]

I’m trying to get back on track. The past week was horrendously busy, the weather was poor, and my bike needed a new rear tire. And after running that sub 10 minute mile paced 10K, I wasn’t really feeling myself yet. Today, after an insanely early day (assisting with technical matters at a 7 am […]

Great Aloha Run 2011–Am I Ready?

I’m almost ready. I ran the best overall race of my life this past Sunday at the Johnny Faerber 10K, but I was struggling with the distance–or rather, going harder than I was used to for longer than I was used to. But I did better than ever. I have two weeks to get ready […]

I’m hopeful for an injury free last couple of weeks of training. It’s been a tough few weeks with work, my part time jobs, and my family all presenting issues. I’ve still been largely able to stay on track with my workouts. I haven’t been able, however, to lose the weight I want or follow […]
