The 2011 Harold Chapson 8K

For the second year in a row, I took on this 8K early in the year, the second of three races in the Great Aloha Run Readiness Series. Having had a rocking 5K a couple of weeks ago I was hoping for a lot of the same.

And in large part, I had it.

Compared to last year’s 11:29 pace, I finished at 10:02–just a hair over the 10 minute mark I consider pretty tough to attain. While my stated target pace was 10:30–same as the 5K, given that the difference in pace between my 5K and 8K last year was 26 seconds (the 8K being a longer race, resulting in a slower pace), I was secretly wishing I might be able to do the same and end up at a pace of 9:39 or so. But regardless, not only is it my best time in an 8K (of which I have only run two) or 10K (of which I’ve run four), it was 1:27 per mile faster than last year’s pace.

If I keep that kind of improvement up, I’ll be quite pleased with the way things go. Next up is the Johnny Faerber 10K in a couple of weeks, then the Great Aloha Run two weeks later.

My Story, Part One Hundred Eighty

I’m working out, but not thrilled. Did both a run and a ride today; the run was very decent, but the ride was not. Figured that since today is my birthday I’d cop out by putting up results rather than a whole lot else. and… Oh, and Sunday is race day! An 8K this time. […]

Rewards

I’m on record as saying that punishments and rewards (or negative and positive consequences, as a social worker like me might say) only work to a certain extent. That said, if I hit some of my target times, I’m planning on rewarding myself this year. For instance, for breaking a 10:30 pace in my 5K–shattering […]

I’m beat. The addition of supervising a former intern for her clinical license hours took just an hour or so this weekend but it certainly seems like I’m more tired than I need to be. I also have been working harder on tracking my finances and food than I have in awhile. What’s interesting is […]

Longer, Not Faster

Ever since the marathon ended, I haven’t been running the distances I had leading up to it–just like I haven’t ridden the distances I’d ride training for the century. So these days I am increasing my mileage so I run and ride a little bit longer than the very short (or in the case of […]

I’m not as fast as I’d like to be, but I don’t know if I ever will be. On the other hand, I’m faster than I was last year. Last year in the 8K leading up to the Great Aloha Run my pace per mile was 11:29. In my five mile “stress test” earlier today […]

What Are My 2011 Goals?

To do events–I believe in 2011 I’ll do (at least) the three race Great Aloha Run Readiness Series (the first leg of which is done), the Great Aloha Run, the Ford Island Bridge 10K, the Jamba Juice Bananaman 10K, the Haleiwa Metric Century, and some others I haven’t yet decided on. I’m pretty sure the […]

A couple of my friends are doing visual food diaries–photographing everything they eat this year. That might be a way to track my eating better. I’m convinced that I work out enough, although I don’t necessarily do enough strength training–that’s changing soon enough. On the other hand, my diet could use work. I’m considering whether […]

Running Gets Cheaper

This entry is cross posted with my other blog, Uncommon Cents: While I’ve been a cyclist for a long time and know where to get cheap cycling goods and clothing–Performance Bike and eBay are two of my favorites–I’m still a newbie at running equipment. Fortunately there’s not a lot of equipment for running. Socks–I’m not […]

My Story, Part One Hundred Seventy Six

I’m intrigued because while on front I’ve made zero progress, on another I’ve made tremendous progress. Due to the influence of Racing Weight, I’ve been very closely tracking my weight and body fat–daily, in fact, as well as running a “stress test” (my own term) on Sundays, currently a three mile time trial. When I […]
